Plan of action!

Okay, so I really gotta work hard on various things which have deadlines coming up. So what I need is a plan of action! :D

1.) Make my turn around animation awesome + attempt to do my final scene with Milly's interaction with the guy who likes her cake (over the weekend!)
2.) Finish cosplay outfit for Kawaii Kon (Do some sewing over the weekend)
3.) Decide on game idea for Kaveh's class (email before Monday)
4.) Finish resume and demo reel (sometime in the early part of next week)
5.) Buy a DVD to put demo reel on (sometime in the early part of next week)
6.) Call Pixar to find out the recommended method of mailing my stuff for internship app (today, weekend or Monday)
7.) Write 1st draft of screenplay for oral tradition class (sometimes next weekend)
8.) Schedule a time to interview people for my folklore class (idk when!)

I think that's it, relatively in order of importance/time schedule. So this weekend is all about animating and cosplay stuffs. Yar. Tonight I'm going to work on adding more frames to my turn around, and check the timing on my acting for it. Hopefully I can get that goal done. And if I can actually do more than that, I'll try to figure out my acting forthe last scene and start thumbnailing the poses out in my sketchbook.

So Spring break is over quite quickly, and it was off to school today. Anyways, posting what animation I was able to do with the short amount of time.

I think I need to change a lot in this scene due to the size of Milly. I had to animate her in a long shot, which doesn't do so well when your character is a few inches tall, and you have to still frame another character who is normal sized...

Also the arm of the scarf girl needs to change. It's all weird like in the walking. I wanted her to walk quicker than that though, so I think I messed up already (ugh, gotta redo all that I think...). I wanted it to be a quick walkby, but I guess it's alright... Darn it Milly; why are you so tiny. T_T

Layout of the turnaround

So this is the scene nearer to the end. The previous scene was a longshot of Milly on the cake after it's completion, with the other cakes of students around her so you can see how cool Milly's cake is. She then turns around (my layout scene) to her partner. I'm going to have a cut in this animation around the part where she first turns around and is staring up to the partner running off looking at her watch, then I'll cut back to this scene again to see Milly's reaction.

Needs more frames near the end half for some painfully long moving holds and such. Also, she loses her ears after she turns around. XD I'll have to go and add those in. Oh and her doink of hair. I didn't even draw that. Oh and also don't look at her changing hat size... durr... o.o I need to fix that. >.< Man, I'm taking forever on this one scene, and I have so many more to go.

Final Animatic... I guess?

Um.. Idk what we were supposed to turn in, so here's a redo of my animatic. We can call this my "final" animatic in that I don't think I'll be doing anymore of them for this film, even though I still need to change stuff. :D

It's not clear just yet, but Milly's partner tells Milly she has to study for a test and so Milly tells her partner it's okay and that she can handle the baking.

I also worked on my turn around, but I didn't have time to put it up as well, so just this animatic will have to do. I worked on my other character's designs (may still need to mess with them) as well as designed a better cake. Also deleted and added scenes for cooking. I have Milly trying to get flour out of the bag, and a scene of her stirring and mixing the batter with difficulty. I wanted to add a scene involving the baking and/or decorating but it's already long with the flour part. I might need to change that and get rid of the elaborate scarf toss and just have Milly in the flour bag from the start.

Turn around - every now and then I get a little bit tired of listening to the sound of my tears...

Ugh. I'm glad this won't be the last animatic, 'cause mine turned out wrong. I turned my touching story into story full of lulz. T_T

The middle part is especially undeveloped, because I couldn't figure out how exactly to show the different things she tries to do to bake, to show the effort and care she puts into it. I also didn't figure out how to show her partner still doing work (right now it appears like he did nothing to bake the cake). I think I ruined it...

I just pray that I can figure out how to fix it before it's over with...

Slightly more concrete story...

So with lots of help, I'm slowly fleshing out my story bit by bit.

The story starts off with a cooking classroom setting. We show a close up of a little girl, Milly, who's bright eyed waiting at her desk. A student walks in and, Milly waves at the student. The student pauses, and smiles awkwardly and waves back, then quickly sits down. Another student comes in, and Milly waves at this student as well, but he/she doesn't notice and instead begins talking excitedly with the first student, whom is obviously a good friend. Milly, lowers her hand slowly and tentatively, somewhat dejected and embarrassed. More students come in, and then finally the teacher who begins class.

The teacher announces that they will get into teams of two and make some sort of food (haven't decided what yet). The teacher pairs up one of the students (maybe the first or second one), with Milly. We see a shot of the student's reaction; a mix of uncertainty, unhappiness, possibly irritation. Then a shot of Milly's reaction, which looks happy and determined.

So they get into their pairings (I think at this point, we can show the size difference between Milly and the other student). We can see Milly trying her best to make friends with the other student, and the other student giving weak smiles at her, but nothing more.

Milly and the student begin; Gathering ingredients, preparing them and finally cooking. Due to her size, we see the difficulty this gives Milly, but she still works her hardest. The other student is a tiny bit more warm with Milly, but there's still that feeling of awkwardness between the two.

Finally, we see the end product, which turns out really good looking. Milly is proud and happy, and looks to her teammate to share in the pride, but her teammate is already going over to talk with his/her friend, leaving Milly with the cooked food. Milly looks disheartened, slumping in her chair a bit and looking down.

Someone clears their voice or taps her on the shoulder, and Milly looks up. Another student from class begins talking to her, at first shyly, about how he/she thinks the food that was made looks delicious. Milly is surprised at first, but then smiles, and replies back with some words. Maybe she compliments the other student or makes a small joke about her food (I'm not too sure just yet about what is said back).

Alternatively, I had the idea that after the food is cooked, Milly kinda digs into her food eagerly, but her teammate kinda looks at her funny, smiles awkwardly, then goes off to meet up with another person in class. Milly looks dejected, when the other student begins talking to her, about how she would like to try her food or something. She does and really likes it. Then the two begin talking.

From this point, eitherway, the final shot will be something like showing Milly smiling maybe.

This ending sounds weak to me, so I'll probably have to tweak. Idk, maybe it'll come to be better as I animate the scenes. The parts I want to emphasize anyway is Milly's emotions, so maybe it'll make the ending turn out better somehow... ^_^;;

Time for storyboards I guess.

Movie Posters - Milly

Okay, so I was playing with a vector idea, 'cause originally I was thinking it'd be neat to do paper cut outs. Since I was at school working on this, and didn't have my construction paper on hand, I thought I'd play with the design in photoshop. In the end, I just did vector like graphics. The first one I designed was the close up one of Milly. She has longish black hair that goes over one eye. Graphically, this is the feature that catches my eye first, and thus I created the design you see here. The problem though, was that I wasn't sure about the mood that it captured. In general, I'm still not sure about the title. I just put that up there for now since the most finished part of my story is my character.

The second poster I created because I had some sort of shadow idea. Originally, I was thinking it'd be neat to see her actual sized compared to another person or some object. I started off by just creating a vector of her. After I did that, I felt like she needed a shadow that enlarged behind her. However, after I did that, I felt the feeling it gave wasn't what I wanted. It had more of a feeling like there was more to her than meets the eye, or something more ominous, when I really wanted people to sympathize with her. So I thought of the idea of having others in the background talking and having fun, and casting their shadow on her. More of the feeling I was trying to get at, although I might still be off on that. DX

Anyways, it was my first time trying vector art, and I'm somewhat happy about it. Whether or not it speaks about the theme I want to get across though is a completely different thing. Tra la la... XD

Poster inspiration? Where is that?

First time posting this semseter. I actually should get my sketches up and whatnot for the 11 second club stuff, but I've been somewhat lethargic so far this semseter. XD

Anyways, so I've been trying to settle something for my story, and I'm still pretty undecided. What it's come down to is the following idea/theme:

I wanted to somehow get that slightly uncomfortable feeling of not quite belonging, across. That feeling that although everyone around you is nice to you, it still feels a bit uncomfortable, like they don't quite get you, and perhaps vice versa. Also that feeling of trying to bridge that gap and make new friends, but perhaps not being able to. I often feel this way in many groups, so I thought I'd base my story around that. Also, I wanted to discuss in this film the concept of if a person should be themselves, even if it may be something that others don't agree with (maybe they find that your personality is irritating), or if they should try and conform to how others want them to behave (or how the person thinks others want them to behave). Personally, I feel there's a balance between those two things. I've always grown up believing that I should always be true to who I am, but I have also realized along the way, that sometimes it's just better to hold back on your true feelings for the sake of others. Sure you could be yourself and defend that you are who you are until the day you die, but what if you could have grown from the change? What if you changed for the better?

So it's between being yourself, and changing for the better. Both I feel are good lessons to be learned.

Ultimately, because I'm still not completely sure on the topic myself, I don't really have a conclusion. Maybe I could leave it open ended as well for others to interpret as they see fit. Maybe I should just stick to one thing.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to get all these complicated thoughts across though through such a short animation..

So far for my story, I was thinking of having a cooking classroom setting. The teacher calls out names to pair people up, when she comes to this one boy. She pairs him up with a girl named Clara Milly Appleton. It's apparent from his expression, that he's not all that comfortable with the idea. The shot then moves to Milly (people often just call her that), and she's smiling and eager. The other thing about Milly is that she is only a few inches tall. Think kind of like thumbalina sized girl. She also has long rabbit like ears that come down from behind her hair, and she wears a bottlecap as a hat. So the teacher tells them to all get into their pairs and start cooking.

Now, I'm unsure as how to continue exactly. I need to think about this more although I'm running out of time. So based off of the stuff I know though, I must now create an inpirational movie poster... that must look finished as well. Sigh. I hope everyone else is fairing better than me.

Scanning Saturday + problems with resizing .mov

I've been trying to resize my final animation so that I could post it on the web, but I haven't been able to resize it. When I export it form premeire at a smaller resolution, it comes out to 50 MB, which is fine. Normally what I would do is take that .mov file into quicktime and then export it again without changing any settings, and usually that somehow makes the file much smaller (ex. from 50MB > 12MB). I never really knew why, but it always worked out that way. Anyways, I tried to do that this time around, and it did export to a smaller size (16MB), however when I played it, it would skip frames. I scrub through it, and all the frames are there, but as soon as I play it, it's rough and skipping. So... idk. XD If anyone has suggetions, it'd be great to hear. :3

Also, been scanning in my images for about 5 hours. I still need to put them together. I had tried using my camera, but it wasn't that great, so I ended up just scanning them. Now I have to fix up a scene for Kaveh's to render on my desktop so that I can work on another scene for Kaveh's/ merge images together on my laptop. Fun times guys, fun times. I hope you all are doing well this weekend.

The title says it all really. I finally "finished" my... final. XD There's so many inbetweens missing in random places, but hey, I tried my best and I'm actually somewhat happy with it. I won't be posting it tonight though cause that involves resizing to something smaller, and right now I don't really feel like it. T_T Just wanna send it to Linda and sleep. I have work tomorrow morning too.

Man I'm grouchy. I think I need some happy drugs or something. :P

I got to see "Bolt" this weekend. It was good and I recommend you guys go and see it when you can. Very very cute. :3

Oh also, when I went to go see this movie, there was a movie trailer for two other 3D animations. One I had already seen previews of and it looks pretty interesting (the tale of despereaux: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0TLYkTSI6s ). The mice are cute. I've never read the book though, nor heard of it before. Any of you guys read it before? Story looks pretty good though.

The other was... bad... (Delgo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbM7aCrF8P4&feature=related) Character designs are boring and way too similar to each other. The story also seems dull. I asked my mom what she thought just to hear the opinion of someone not taking any animation classes, and she told me that she tried to be interested, but ultimately she just didn't want to watch it.

I'm pretty happy with how some of my new scenes came out, although it's a bit hard to see some since I tried overlaying a background on some parts and I didn't do it with a transparency or anything (lol, I just put them straight into premeire and changed the opacity of the BG image to 50%). Well, it's not the final turn in animation yet. Just the one right before..

Mushibaba -the tale of the B52 killing samurai woman from Oahu. XD

Okay, so earlier tonight, I was sitting in my boyfriend's living room by myself, drawing and trying to come up with a story, when I heard the sounds of scratchy feet around the kitchen. I then saw a bunch of B52 cockroaches running around. I was just hoping they'd leave me alone, when one flew up on the living room light. My boyfriend's mother happens to come up the stairs at that moment, and I warn her about the roaches. She looks around, and grabs a green flyswatter. With flyswatter in hand, she takes aim at the roach on the light, and attacks, but misses! The roach flies around, making circles around her head as she swats away at it, barely missing the bug. Finally, the roach lands, and she's able to get a good swat in to finish the job. There was a bunch of screaming in there along with samurai "hiyaah!!" sounds that she was making, as she blindly attacked (she said she was swatting with her eyes closed, but I hadn't noticed, lol) but it was pretty epic and funny at the time. XD

Anyways, it inspired me to draw a very quick drawing of her, and thus I had a better story idea. I'm not completely sure if I'll use it or not, but it's the best thing I got so far. Mushibaba was what she called herself after the event, and I just thought it was a great name. :D

The actual story I'll be doing will be similar to that, but with more samurai like poses and awesomeness. I also wanted to play around with the character designs more and composition of the animation. This'll be pretty hard considering what I imagine the animation to look like in my head. For the action scene of her swatting the roach as it flies around her, I wanted to have the camera pan around her slowly as she also rotates and spins trying to attack.

The image quality is super bad (again, due to shitty laptop camera), so I'll have to reload this later. Prolly will really have to think about the composition and redo. Too bad we don't have too much time. I doubt I'll be able to finish this all...

Sorry for bad quality. I took the pics on my shitty laptop cam. I'll later on take better quality images. For now, click to view the entire image (although it doesn't improve much). Anyways, still don't really have an idea that I am completely enthusiastic about. I like the idea of a girl running and turning into a cheetah just cause I think it'd be fun to animate, but no real story goes with it. :(

I have this other idea that randomly came up tonight, but I'll post that in a little bit along with a mini storyboard. It would work well as a story, but I'm not completely sold yet, so we'll see... will post soon.

So it's Friday morning-ish, and I still can't figure out what I want to do for the story! T_T I've been thinking and drawing characters and trying to look at other animations on youtube and whatnot for inspiration, but have not found that spark! I have like bits and pieces all over the place but can't figure out an actual story that seems like something I really want to do.. something that means something to me that I want to share with everyone. I've thought of things that I like, and drawn characters that I think would be fun to animate, but I have no situation. I have to come up with something by tonight though, so whatever I have by then will be it I guess. I saw some other people's stories and drawings already and they're so good! I need to find something like that too.

So my thoughts so far/actions I thought might be fun to animate were:
-Something to do with one or multiple miniture characters that walk around in our world and use/create tools, clothing, etc. out of things that humans drop.
-Something to do with a humanish character that can transform into an animal (thinking cheetah). Possibly something like a little girl playing and imagining that she's an animal (or multiple animals?) and I can draw the transformation which I think would be fun.
-Along the same lines with imagination, there's a door with a peephole with light shining through it. Someone comes along and sees it and looks in and sees (imagines) some fantasy world or other imaginary things on the other side.
-I think someone rolling around on the ground would be fun to do
-Potatoes. No one animates those even though they're so awesome and full of potential. :D
-Bugs. I like bugs and want to animate cute ones or scary ones or w/e!
-I was wondering if I could do an animation on a short story/folklore from Hawaii/Japan or wherever. There are a lot of old folklore and fables etc. that would be great as animations, but Idk about copyright issues etc, or if we're allowed to do a story that is not our own for our final project.
-more ideas coming soon probably.

If anyone has anything to say about these thoughts or help that might be provided to improve or expand on them, I welcome it with open arms.

I'll post images of w/e I can get done way later tonight prolly.

Voice One: "I mean, what's the point? Ain't nobody gonna win, it's just gonna go on and on..."

After a bunch of thinking, I happened across this idea by chance. I was drawing/doodling different characters randomly to see if I happened to like any of them enough to make something out of it, when I happened to draw a frog. I had been thinking of the idea of making the dialogue about playing tick-tac-toe right before, but when I drew the frog, I ended up thinking about a frog crossing a busy road while two other frogs looked on at him talking.

It's sort of a play on the game frogger, like a real life version. Although I'm not even sure if there are any sort of copyright things with that.

I'm also unsure about if I should or should not have some cuts to the frog jumping across the street or not, and also for the ending, when (or if) I should show the frog getting hit by the car. Also, I may need to rework my character designs more to make them a bit more interesting. They're rather boring now that I look at it again.

Favorite of the 11 sec club

Choose this animation as my favorite out of the 11 sec club for the month of September. There were a few other good ones, but I narrowed it down to this one. I liked the timing on his reaction and the followthrough of his motions drinking the cup and such. Also, it was one of the few who didn't overdo it when it came to the killing of the first speaker.

What's in the Box - Revisions

Well, with what time I had, here's the final the second time around. Added a small beginning, and fixed some frames here and there. Added a bit more stretch/exaggeration in for the toss. It's still not perfect though, but I'm running low on time. T_T

Here's some images of my character design. Mostly it's images of the poses and some key framing that I'll be using, as well as experimenting with different expressions.

It's supposed to be that she doesn't want to go and deal with what's in the box, but preps herself mentally and walks with determination towards the box to just get it over with. When she comes to the box, she'll be surprised and then eventually nostalgically happy to find that there was something in the box that she hasn't seen in a long time.... something like that is the plan. XD;;

I intend to post some key frames up today.. if all goes as planned. But we'll see if I can get it up before 6:00...

Okay, so as I'm running out of time (I have to be somewhere else that is not home), I have to turn this assignment in a few hours early. I need more frames in there, mostly for the end to refine it and make it actually look decent...

My mom previewed it and told me she does a funny wiggle thing at the end, so I took out one frame to make it less wiggly. Also, I need more frames to give it better timing. The timing isn't very good at all.

Meanwhile I also have a lot of work to do with Kaveh's assignments. I'm having trouble with my layers in that I want to add wavy tv lines, but idk how to do that without getting rid of either a) the color of the hologram or b) the transparency of it. If anyone has tips on how they're doing their hologram, it'd be appreciated. I haven't gotten to work on it much... :(

This is a rough animation. I haven't even gotten to the end yet, but I think I need to post whatever I can by today at 5 or 6pm, and I wasn't sure if I would encounter any uploading issues etc., thus here I am posting at 4pm. I'm missing a bunch of inbetweens here and there, and of course I'm missing the actual throw of the ball off screen. However, before I continue further, I think I need to check and see if what I've done so far is generally on the right track. ^_^;;

I was having a lot of trouble getting this one down I think, so any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Week One - Character and Scene Design, Action Posed out

I'm not exactly sure if I did this correctly... I had though we were doing the posing in the 2nd week, but on the assignment paper it said "action posed out". I'm not even that sure about what would be expected of me for that. I didn't get to include all the poses I was thinking of, however I think my scene idea is too long. I'll have to ask Linda if I need to cut it down or what.

Also, I'm not sure about the mobility of my character. The idea was to make a character that had difficulty moving and trouble lifting, but I may have gone too far. She might not be able to demonstrate the weight and balance well enough. Again, I'll have to ask Linda about that. :\

I hope people can see this. :o Tried to make the arms move and the head bob a bit, but I'm still having trouble with it I think. I need more practice with splines I think. I tried to even it all out but I'm sure there are unnecessary points in there for the arms.

This is an attempt at the 3D walk cycle. I had trouble with the foot on frames 8 and 9 because the toe would curl. I got some help from a labbie though, and instead used the rotation when the foot lifted until it touched down again. Here's a side view and front view.

For the first frame and the 4th frame, I just used premeire to hold the frame for longer. I wonder if I'm allowed to do that or if I'm supposed to draw the same exact frame again.... o.o;;

Okay so we needed to do these 3 key frame expressions for the next assignment. I'm not sure if these expressions and poses are correct or not, but I don't have too many options right now. Since I won't be able to get home and upload anything tomorrow (or today if you look at the time) until 7:00pm and the homework, I believe, is due 5:00pm, I needed to finish this today. >.>;; At least I had time today to do some sketching of expressions and such in my book, so I had something to work from. The expression is pouty/angry -> happy. It's kind of like me, lawl. ;P

Anyways, I wasn't sure also if what we posted was suppposed to just be 3 images, or have the images animated together (although it's only 3 frames right now, so yeah... probably not). I just did both, so meh.

Okay, so after turning it in and getting feedback from Linda, I tried to rework my animation. I did my best to make the shoulders and hips move like actual... shoulders and hips. ;P And I tried to fix the balance issue on one of the frames. I don't think I liked doing this over the 2nd time around as much, but still had fun with it. I think I want to rework it from the beginning though at some point. I'm sure I'll get my chance later on. :3

Bouncing Ball with tail! :o

Okay. So this animation I believe took about as long as the ball bounce did. I had to just copy my original ball bounce (with some changes so that the ball was not egg shaped), and then add a tail. I'm not entirely sure if the tail is flowing correctly though. I used the information I got from class, some vids I saw online (unfortunately only flash), and my own thoughts of how a tail would follow a ball. Combined it becomes "CAPTAIN LANET"!! Or maybe just a tail on a ball bouncing. O.o;;

Also, working on doing the hair toss/head turn animation. Having loads of trouble on some parts of the head turn. I just can't find any good references for a short bob haircut style head turn. :\ Some parts look okay I guess, but the rest are just poo. :( Will try to finish it before the next class though.

Cat tails and Frustrating programs DX

omg... I had the worst time trying to complete this. I don't really understand how to use premiere, so I had to modify it on my own. I don't think I did it right even then. 24 fps and 4 frames or something right? I couldn't find the option to make it 4 frames. Looks slow so idk if that's correct or not. Also had trouble with compressing and getting rid of the black border... lots of problems. I then tried to just make it 24fps in quicktime, but yeah, all kinds of trouble. I think I need to do something between the loops because I think the reason it doesn't look fluid might be due to a lack of some sort of pause between the video, because the images should link fine. I think it's a timing issue which I don't know how to fix. Will need help on this one by a lot...

Okay, testing this out to see if I can get it to work... EDIT: Okay, so I think I got it to work both as a link and as an imedded thing. x.x The first link and first emedded video is the ball bouncing. The second link and second embedded video is the ball bouncing with a little face. Kind of hard to see though I guess. I had to use my camera to take pictures, and I couldn't get better lighting. Also, the camera refused to focus properly all the time. I have a scanner, but it's too small. I'm not too sure what I should do... Also, I changed the fps on the ball with face to 12 fps instead of 24, that way the face could be seen a little better while still maintaining a pretty good bounce. :3

Here we go again. Redid this, although I couldn't figure out how to make it all work with Windows movie maker, so I ended up doubling images manually and then doing it in quicktime pro again. Quicktime won't open the files made in movie maker, and also I couldn't figure out how to adjust the fps. I was able to make each image 2 second duration, but couldn't do a thing about the fps. :\

Weight Sketches

So I doodled and sketched a bit. I'm not too sure about how they turned out though. I might do a few more sketches tomorrow in class if I have the opportunity. I tried to sketch my bf holding weights in the 2nd image, but I guess they weren't heavy enough. I think I just need to get the hang of it maybe.

This is the first post I'm making here in this blog. This blog will be for my UH animation class, so it should be interesting.
